A Northern Argentine outpost it may be but Salta is a surprisingly buzzing city. A stunning mountainous backdrop and plenty of interesting stuff to do in town makes this a popular stop for backpackers.
Leon, Nicaragua
Leon is a brilliant if somewhat unlikely backpacking destination. A city with a violent past hasn't lost any of it's passion and although decades have past since the revolution, it is still visible everywhere in this left-leaning town.
